1. a shoe made of a single block of wood hollowed out, worn esp. by farmers and workers in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, etc.
2. a shoe with a thick wooden sole and sides and a top of coarse leather.
3. Military.
a. a wooden or metal disk formerly attached to a projectile in a muzzleloading cannon.
b. a soft metal ring at the base of a projectile that makes the projectile conform to the rifling grooves of a gun.

  1. A wooden shoe worn in some European countries.

  2. (sāb'ət) A sandal or shoe having a band of leather or other material across the instep.

  3. A lightweight carrier in which a projectile of a smaller caliber is centered so as to permit firing the projectile within a larger-caliber weapon. The carrier fills the bore of the weapon from which the projectile is fired; it is normally discarded a short distance from the muzzle.

sabot

heavy work shoe worn by European peasants, especially in France and the Low Countries. There are two kinds of sabots: one is shaped and hollowed from a single piece of wood (called klompen by the Dutch); the other is a heavy leather shoe with a wooden sole.
